Exercise Bar Maintenance

Lets face it whether you spent $150 or $1500 on your gymnastics bars it probably represents a significant investment on your part. If you are running a gym, especially a CrossFit or Strength and Conditioning gym, bars are definitely one of the most used and abused pieces of equipment you have. Often though nobody takes the time to properly maintain the bars. Let’s face it, the bar gets used and forgotten about, not to mention that often there are a variety of bar brands that are being used and typically the manufacturers do not send out information regarding the care of the bar. In fact I emailed all of our bar vendors asking them for information on how to maintain and care for their bars and one actually emailed me and said, “Here is our warranty information. Don’t overload the bar, don’t drop the bar.” That was it! Nothing else. I have to tell you I was floored. So, the question remains, “How do we maintain and care for our Olympic bars?”


One thing that should be obvious about bars is that they are steel. Steel rusts when it gets wet. People sweat. Sweat=Wet=Bar Rust. Bar manufacturers try to combat this by putting a coating on the bars. The most common coatings (from least expensive to most expensive) are black oxide, chrome, zinc, and making bars from stainless steel. Even with these coatings you still need to maintain the bar so hear are a few tips on what you can do.

Clean the chalk out of the knurling. If you use chalk and you are the only one using the chalk then please clean the chalk off the bar. If you provide chalk at your gym then you need to clean the chalk off regularly (probably daily). Use a small stiff nylon bristle brush to go over the knurling. Remember that chalk dries sweaty palms. How does it do this? By absorbing moisture. Guess what it does while sitting on the bar. Absorbs moisture! Any humidity in the air any moisture at all and the chalk will absorb and hold it on the steel. So if you want your bars to not rust please clean off the chalk.

Wipe your bars down regularly with a light coat of WD-40 or 3 in 1 oil. Regularly depends on how often the bar is used. If this is in your house then twice a month should be sufficient. If you are in a commercial setting then once a week would be better. If your using them a lot and in a high humidity area then you might need to do it more frequently. WD-40 works well because it is a water displacer and it dries quickly. Spray it on a rag and wipe it down giving a good even coat across the whole bar. If you use 3 in 1 oil again place it on the rag and give a nice thin coating across the gymnastics bars. Let it sit overnight and then wipe it down again. 3 in 1 will work awesome but it will leave your bars feeling a bit more greasy then WD-40.

Most bars today have been made to be fairly maintenance free. You typically do not have to oil the sleeves. Most of the sleeves have oil impregnated bearings or bushings. Some of the higher end bars do have small oil holes in the sleeves. For these bars you would drop in some 3 in 1 oil (DO NOT use WD-40 here) and let it work into the sleeve. Again do this after use and check it before using it again for any excess that may have leaked out to wipe it up.


Bars should not be stored with weight on them. PERIOD. If you leave weight on your bar, especially if it is racked, you are just begging for a bent bar. The are designed to withstand the weight not designed to permanently hold the weight. Strip you bars. I know you are tired after a hard workout but please catch your breath and put the plates away. Not only will this protect your bar, but if you are in a gym it will make the next person who uses the bar much happier if they don’t have to strip it for you.

The bars can be stored on the rack unloaded or in a bar stand. If you can store them horizontally it is better the vertically. We highly recommend that you do not store needle bearing bars in a horizontal bar holder. Dropping the bar into the holder can cause damage to the needle bearings. Most gyms that teach the Olympic lifts (that would use a needle bearing bar) do not care about mirrors so it is very easy to make a wall rack that you can store the bars on. Pull Up Is the Most Important Ectomorph Exercise

The pull up is considered one of the most difficult exercises for anyone to do, but for those of the ectomorphic body type it’s an incredibly important pull up bar for door exercise that provides you with upper arm strength, improved grip (a particular weakness of all ectomorphs) and the desired ‘V’ look. Where do you do a pull up? There are often places in gyms, or even in public (playgrounds, trees etc) where you can do pull ups, but in the early days it can be embarrassing how few pull ups you’ll be able to do. Plus, your ineffectiveness is sort of a wasted trip the gym in the first place.

The solution is to buy what is known as a pull up bar for door. These are fantastic and affordable devices (mine only cost $30) that lock into any standard door frames and transform it into the perfect station for both pull ups and chin ups. They’re easy to store away, can be as temporary as you wish and are just all around ingenious inventions.

How do you do an effective pull up? Here are some simple ways to do proper, effective pull ups:

  • Start from a dead hang, which means having your arms fully outstretched in line with your elbows. This’ll limit how many pull ups you can do, but they’ll be more effective.
  • Briefly pause both in the up and down position to eliminate momentum which can hinder the intensity of your training.
  • Just keep up with it. At first progress will be slow. In the early days I could barely do 1-2 pull up bar for door. These days I routinely knock out 8 or so, and these are completely without momentum and using the dead hang position.



2006 NCAA football season

Fall camps are under way and the regular season will be here soon so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time and author is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.

Fargo’s Take The other SEC Tigers’ team is next on the list as Auburn will be the one team to challenge LSU in the SEC West. The auburn tigers return most of the cogs from their 9-3 season and they will be looking to get back to the SEC Championship after missing it last year. LSU defeated Auburn in overtime which was the ultimate tiebreaker for the West title and it was a game that should have been won as Auburn missed five field goals. A disappointing loss to Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl should have this team very motivated this season. The Tigers had the top ranked offense in the SEC a season ago and it will be potent once again led by quarterback Brandon Cox and tailback Kenny Irons. The defense finished 6th in scoring last year and will be one of if not the fastest defense in the conference. The schedule is nearly just the opposite to that of LSU and that is the main reason Auburn gets the nod to take the division and makes a solid run at the National Championship.

Returning Starters on Offense – 6 There was not a whole lot on offense heading into 2005 as Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams all had to be replaced so it was expected to be a down year. The exact opposite took place as Cox finished with 2,324 yards along with 15 touchdowns and just eight interceptions while Irons went from backup tailback to starter and led the SEC in rushing. This season, the loss of the top three receivers will be tough to overcome but there is plenty of young talent that will be asked to contribute right away. Courtney Taylor is the only senior starter and he will be the go to guy. The other big concern is lack of depth along the offensive line. Three starters are back but the second team is made up of three sophomores and a redshirt freshman. All in all, the unit does not expect to dropoff much.

Returning Starters on Defense – 6 Auburn will be pegged as one of the top defenses in the conference yet again. The Tigers finished 19th in the country in total defense last year and they are once again strong from front to back. The front seven lost five players to graduation but it is still extremely experienced with four seniors leading the way. The best player is Will Herring, who is the starting strongside linebacker after starting the last three years at safety. He is such a good athlete that he will likely be an All-SEC selection yet again despite a position change. The secondary brings back both corners and depth at safety is strong which allowed Herring to move up. The biggest concern isn’t on the field but on the sidelines as Will Muschamp will be the auburn tigers third defensive coordinator in the last three years.

Schedule Auburn gets the edge over LSU because of the schedule. The non-conference portion is extremely easy with Washington St., Buffalo, Tulane and Arkansas St. being four easy wins. The best part is that those games are spread out and not bunched together at the start of the season. The SEC slate is obviously difficult but the four toughest games are all at home, which is the exact opposite of LSU. Home games against LSU, Florida, Arkansas and Georgia are all winnable which likely would not be the case if they were on the road. The road slate starts easy with Mississippi St., South Carolina and Mississippi being the first three with the Iron Bowl at Alabama being the toughest of the bunch to close out the year.

You can bet on… Yes, the Tigers have a difficult SEC schedule but this team has gone 16-1 within the conference over the last two seasons and with the difficult games all being played in Jordan-Hare Stadium, going undefeated in the conference is not all that implausible. Some breaks will have to their way but this team is strong throughout and will make it tough for anyone else out of the West to catch them. Auburn has had a winning ATS record in three of the last four years, going 30-17-1 against the number over that span. This includes a 15-6-1 ATS mark over the last two years but trying to keep up that pace will be difficult. Expect to see some big numbers being given by the auburn tigersas the public is well aware of their recent success and will be riding it out as far as it possibly can.

Many people think that being a Christian is about loving God with their heart and perhaps committing their soul to Him. Others think it’s about doing good deeds and serving God with all their strength. When it comes to the mind, though, many think they have to believe whatever they are supposed to believe without questioning it. Instead of loving God with their minds, they close their minds. This position directly opposes the words of Jesus.

For you to love God fully, it will involve all four: your mind in addition to your heart, soul, and strength.
